Walking Away

No, its not a Craig David song. I just bought a pedometer ($2 @ Priceline :)) today and was going to record how many steps I took in a day to see if I was getting roughly the right amount of ‘exercise’ without even knowing it. Found these few helpful sites that explained the whole concept about taking 10 000 steps per day, the idea which originated in Japan.

This site mentioned that a sedentary person takes about 1000 - 3000 steps per day. I started wearing the pedometer at 5pm today and went about and did house chores and ate dinner and the counter already says I took 1489 steps. In 2 hours. I don’t think I would classify myself as a sedentary person after that.

I’m going to wear it to work tomorrow, for my shift starting 8am till 3pm and see how many steps I’ve taken throughout the day. The goal is to take 10 000 steps per day, to keep active. I’m generally sick of feeling so unfit and so flabby during the winter and exam months. Those chocolates at the supermarket don’t really do much for the wait after a while….Hurrr….

So here’s the plan:
1. No more chocolate and junk food allowed. Only 1 item of junk food is allowed per month as a treat.
2. No taking naps during the day unless sleep the night before was 6 hours or less.
3. Exercise! Dancing to music is exercise. Cleaning up my room is exercise. Walking around is exercise.
4. Spend 15 minutes a day tidying up my room (Yes, dad this is your advice all along :P)

A plan is nothing if I don’t keep track of any progress right? Here’s to making progress!
