Things In My Handbag

In the spirit of procrastinating, I’ve decided to create a picture post just cause. Don’t need a reason right? :P

So, I tipped out the contents of my handbag and voila! This is what I’ve discovered that I’ve been carrying around on my poor shoulders and can’t live without:

The Battered Phone
Handphone. Good ol mobile which connects me with the world and my friends :) Once I forgot to bring my mobile or when my mobile died while I was out, it felt so horrible. All I wanted to do for the day was to go home and recharge the drained batteries or to go home and get my phone and check my messages and phone calls.

Wallet and Cards
Wallet. I think I wouldn’t function without this one. No money, no cards, no SmartRider, wouldn’t get far now would I?

Old
iPod. The thing that pretty much keeps me sane during my long bus rides home. I think a few times where my iPod batteries were drained, the bus ride seemed sooooooooooo long it was almost cruel. I can only look at my watch ever so often and realise that only 1 minute had passed since I saw it.

My babies
Sunnies. Since I lost the Sportsgirl ones and Nic squished the Dotti ones, I bought myself some Baby Doll sunnies :)

Eye drops. I wear contacts so really its vital that I carry this around or else you would see me randomly blinking on the street when my eyes are dry and guys might think I’m trying to pick them up. Lip balms and lip glosses. I’m a bit on the vain side, enough said. Tissue paper. For all the wiping of mouths when you have bits and pieces stuck on my mouth or sticky hands. Or more like carry it around for Ange to use…haha. Chewing gum. For all those after coffee mornings for that minty fresh breath

So, enough of peeking in my handbag. A girl’s gotta have other things in her bag that has got to be kept private :P

Headaches

Did you know bananas can cause a headache?

I had a banana today for breakfast.

The Things I Do

So technically I’ve already started uni last week, but I have yet to have a class. I only have a week of classes next week and then I’ll be off hanging around till May when I have to go to uni for my next set of one week classes. So much for having to pay AUD$10 900 for 3 units that I’m supposedly doing this semester. In actual fact I’m doing 2 units, 1 self-directed prac and a community practice theoretical unit. The other 4 units are being crammed into next semester. So I’ve only really in effect got till June to do the things I need to do before having to work my butt off at prac.

I’ve got to:

  1. Claim that coffee from Leigh-San, which I shall be doing next week when we meet up for lunch
  2. Play that elusive game of golf
  3. Learn how to play tennis from someone
  4. Learn how to play more than just notes on the guitar
  5. Get that job in the hospital
  6. Learn how to drive properly, chauffeur the girls around
  7. Go for lunch with the people from church. I have yet to actually stay longer than 30 minutes after church since I need to rush off to work after service

Speaking of the things I do, last week has been a week filled with pain. Sunday/Monday my wrist was painful from dismantling the bookshelf (too many screws in the thing caused an acute case of RSI to my carpal tunnel), Thursday was my back where I suddenly leaned over a table and wham! this massive pinching sensation went thru my left lower back and down to my left leg. It came to a point where I couldn’t stand and that was when I broke out in cold sweat, thinking I could have done some permanent damage to my back and Sunday was the day of the splitting headache. Actually the splitting part of the headache has gone but it comes back now and then as a throbbing pain behind my right eye socket. Maybe its the heat and tiredness doing this to me, I don’t know.

Somehow my back stopped hurting after I put on a back brace for the remainder of work. It got better to the point where I was able to walk with just a tad bit of pain and nearly managed to fall butt first into a bowl of passionfruit flavoured cream. That would be a sight, no? Speaking about falling into things, I can say (shamefully) that I fell into the chest freezer at work on Sunday :S The ladder slipped out of me and in a split second I was hanging halfway in and out of the chest freezer. I must say I have a knack for falling into/out of things, just like the time where I nearly fell into the massive mixing bowl while making continental cheesecakes.

I wonder what other things I’ll fall into or out of next.

Of Names and Things

So the procrastination bug strikes again, I’ve got an essay about how culture has shaped my attitudes towards health and to explore and describe how gaining a broader understanding of health beyond my own cultural context might enhance my future practice of occupational therapy. Tell me that just looks like a bunch of big and sophisticated looking words. Its a 4 pages essay with 1 page of references and bibliography which is due in on Tuesday, 11th March. A week from now. For one trying to define culture, the essay can go on for miles if I just sit and compile down all the definitions of culture and how it influences me. But fortunately for me, I’ve got a 4 page limit and free reign over the content I present in the assignment. To take my mind of that pesky headache which has been bugging me on and off for 3 days now and to try and close one eye to my assignment, here I am. Blogging.

So the other day I was juts sitting at the bus port, waiting for my bus to get to work and I just let my mind wander off while listening to the tunes of The Way I Are by Timbaland. Then as I begin to drift into lala land, I began thinking about names. About how most people in Australia always shorten names such as Natalie to Nat, Timothy to Tim and such. I’ve never been a fan of people shortening other people’s names without their permission. Call me old fashioned or a nannna but it has been instilled in me by my elders never to simply go changing people’s names. Its in the Asian culture that we always address our elders by Aunty or Uncle so and so and not by their first names. So when I came here 4 long years ago and everyone started calling our teachers by their first name, you could imagine my horrified face. It’s so laid back here that the teachers insist you call them that. I supposed I’ve adjusted to that but when it comes to greeting my Asian elders or someone’s parents, its always Aunty or Uncle so and so or Mr or Mrs so and so. It’s just proper manners to me.

Back to the shortening of names. I’ve grown up being called by my full first name, Kristine. It is only recently that I have actually allowed people that I know well or am comfortable with to call me Kris or Krissy. It still annoys the crap out of me that some people call me Kris the minute I introduce myself as Kristine. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind people calling me Kris but somehow when a person I don’t know very well calls me Kris it just somehow gets to me that they know me very well and they are quite chummy with me to be able to call me whatever they want. A person’s name is what they are identified by, and to me they’re cutting out my identity for some reason. My given name is Kristine and it will always stay that way, so Kris is just for friends and family. Let’s leave it that way. I don’t know why I have so much of an issue with that but hey, that’s my opinion.

Ranting aside, nothing new has been happening lately apart from work, doing the project proposal, assignment, bible studying and packing up. And since I don’t really want to write that essay, here’s a meme I just felt like doing since Suet Li did it recently and it looks like one of the more exciting ones :)
